A truly authentic Italian restaurant

Mimmo and Tina Barracano didn't come from Naples to what was once a tiny corner of Edgewater decades ago to create a knockoff for diners unfamiliar with the differences in Italian cuisine. They created the real thing.

When we say authentic, we're talking someone's dining room. Even the entrance feels like a hallway into someone's apartment. The tables are close together, so you'd best feel sociable -- because someone nearby probably will. And if you don't like Caruso, Pavoratti, Dino or Sinatra -- well, it's time to start.

But here's the catch (pun definitely intended): Without fine wine and fresh fish specials, Mimmo and Tina couldn't pull it off.

Recent dinners of sea bass and salmon, fileted at your table, have been fresh and mouth-watering. The bass-like branzini has its charms, as well. Penne al la vodka is always a hit, as is the chicken valdostana.

If you have reservations, eat there, anyway (sorry: couldn't resist a very old joke). Figure on spending from $35-50 for two people, not including the vino. But also look out for the lunch specials, from noon to 3 p.m., that offer salad, appetizer and entree for only $16 a mouth.

And if you're feeling cramped, al fresco tables outside offer more privacy.

Don't be afraid to ask about their catch of the day or freshest fish. Then you're guaranteed to be satisfied.

But be warned: Unlike many "spaghetti-and-meatball" would-be Italian joints, Mimmo and Tina have been in business long enough to know how best to season their Southern Italian specialties. So don't get all "When Harry Met Sally" picky about what you want or don't want on your food -- although you can get dressing on the side -- or you might get the evil eye.

That's what authentic, off-the-boat Italian home cooking is all about, paisano mio.

Just be patient. On the one hand, the wait staff isn't pushy (always a good thing). But the flip side is that you shouldn't assume they will know when to bring the check. You have to ask.

And since the food is made from scratch, it isn't suddenly going to be rushed to your table on a scorching hot plate.

La Vecchia Napoli is extremely easy to find. Just get onto River Road. If you're heading south from the Fort Lee area, it's on your right, across the street from town hall. If you're coming down from Hudson County, it's on your left, after the entrance to Whole Foods. A traffic light on the corner makes it difficult to miss.

Given the lack of parking in the busy area, it's great that La Vecchia Napoli has valet service. And don't worry if it's raining -- they'll bring you an umbrella.
