BEYOND: Four Amish adults were charged with illegal alcohol possession, while several others fled, after a buggy collided with a police cruiser headed to a report of a drinking party.
A report that is spreading online cites police saying that several buggies were headed south on a local road in Sherman, N.Y., near Pennsylvania. when one suddenly pulled into the northbound lane, smacked into the cruiser and keeled over.
One occupant sustained minor injuries when the buggy pinned his leg, reports the Jamestown Post-Journal in New York. The horse broke free and ran into a nearby barn, an officer from the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Department said.
Several other buggies took off.
The 20-year-old driver admitted to have the party on his property, the sheriff’s spokesman said.
Despite the common perception, the Amish don’t strictly prohibit alcohol the way Mormons do. It’s all up to the particular community and custom.
And in what might seem a reversal to some, it’s the New Order Amish who oppose it – along with tobacco and recreational sex – citing the Bible. More lax rules can be found among those of the Old Order.
