YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: The “Don’t Stand By for Bullying” contest, open to all Bergen County students, is under way.

Sponsored by county Prosecutor John L. Molinelli, the contest asks entrants to tell how they won’t stand for bullying and offers online voters a choice of three finalists at each grade level.

Contest participation has spiked from 40 schools in last year’s first contest to 56 this year. School officials were asked to submit a finalist from each grade level.

Elementary school students created posters, middle school students crafted PowerPoint presentations, and high school students produced videos.

Molinelli said the contest “has been a valuable tool for educators” because it “encourages young people to consider any bullying behavior as unacceptable and to report a problem rather than being a silent bystander.”

The next step is the online voting, beginning today and running through March 30, on the prosecutor’s website:  www.bcpo.net.
