Tens of thousands of websites operated by reputable companies — including the Los Angeles Times — were recently targeted by “Darkleech,” a mysterious toolkit that has undermined the extremely popular web-serving software Apache.

According to arstechnica.com, Darkleech “injects invisible code into webpages, which in turn surreptitiously opens a connection that exposes visitors to malicious third-party websites.”

Researchers “aren’t ruling out the possibility of password cracking, social engineering, or attacks that exploit unknown bugs in frequently used applications,” it says.

Mac users apparently have been spared. Same for mobile users and Windows users running Firefox or Chrome as browsers.

Although there’s no foolproof, all-purpose protection from every potential threat, everyone can take certain simple steps to reduce risk. None are complicated in any way.

Howard Owens, publisher of The Batavian, an extremely successful independent online site in upstate New York, was victimized yesterday. While fixing the problem, he offered readers helpful advice:

• If any type of INSTALL pop-up appears while you’re visting a web site, DON’T click any buttons. Click the small red “X” in the upper-right corner;

• All browsers and operating systems are subject potential viruses, but if you must use Windows, download, install and regularly use Chrome or Firefox. These browsers are less likely to be targeted and are not as directly linked to your operating system as Internet Explorer;

• On Windows especially, keep your anti-virus software up to date (Some cynics believe it’s the anti-virus companies who write viruses so that people will buy their software);

• Keep your system software up-to-date with the latest patches (That’s the MAJOR reason people sometimes can’t see certain stories in the CVP archive);

• If you believe your computer has been compromised, visit a local computer shop and have your system checked;

• Regarding e-mail: Never click a link that looks suspicious. Often times people get e-mails from somebody they know that says something like, “check this out,” but that person you’re getting the e-mail from has been hacked and that link in that e-mail will deliver a virus to your computer.

Glossary:

Hacker: The common layperson’s term for somebody who breaks into computers and Web servers. The more precise term is “cracker,” because the correct definition of hacker is anybody who writes computer code.

Java: A computer programming language used on all computers to help some pieces of software run. If you run your regular system updates on Windows or Mac, you will receive these updates from Microsoft or Apple and any other request for updates should be viewed as malicious.

Web browser: What you used to look at a Web page. Common ones are Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome and Opera. We recommend either Chrome or Firefox.

Server: A computer sitting at a remote location that contains all of the data and files that make up Web site.

I grew up in North Jersey. It’s always been my center of the universe — a hip, happening place where people aren’t easily fooled.

That’s one reason why I will never tell you I heard something from someone who heard it from someone else. Instead, you get what can and can’t be verified.

Having a bit of an edge doesn’t hurt.

I also get it to you as quickly as possible. If you hear about something and you’re wondering what happened, chances are you’ll find it on CLIFFVIEW PILOT (And if you don’t, please get hold of me right away).

That’s why CLIFFVIEW PILOT has no-nonsense, from-the-scenes dispatches instead of days-old spokespeople reports. That’s how much our sources and contacts trust us to always do the right thing.

We’re not in the business of exposes or “gotchas.” By singling out a target, you are in reality going after that person’s family, friends, co-workers and others who know him/her better than you ever will.

Make no mistake, though: If evidence of favoritism or unfair treatment comes to light, we’re all over it. We NEVER turn a blind eye to anything.

CLIFFVIEW PILOT follows some other principles that may at first seem unusual, given how a great deal of the media around here behaves.

There’s absolutely NO badgering of the bereaved. The only funerals we cover involve police officers, firefighters or other public servants so widely known in the community that their passing demands such a tribute. Still, there are rules: (1) We keep a respectful distance; and (2) The family must OK it first. Otherwise, we don’t go.

We also do all we can to find out about predators in your midst, so that your children can remain safe, and promote causes that help those in need.

I made my bones as a newsman covering cops and courts: I exposed wrongdoing, put bad guys in prison and won local and national awards for investigative reporting. I also ran a “Law & Order” team that, among its accomplishments, forced an Attorney General from office. My work helped make multi-use buildings safer, tightened regulations for the use of public housing money and exposed lax security on the George Washington Bridge.

In doing this, I learned that I was better off, as were you, by giving the proper authorities what I had and letting them take it from there. They do their job; I do mine.

In turn, I have built — and continue to build — a contact/source base that I would put up against anyone’s in the tri-state area, much less New Jersey.

They range from the street to the very top of their respective agencies. They know the real story, and they trust me with it. They’re honest, reliable and dedicated. And they’re everywhere (at least it seems that way, doesn’t it?).

But that’s not what puts CLIFFVIEW PILOT over the top.
