ONLY ON CLIFFVIEW PILOT: Fair Lawn Detective Jeffrey Welsh received the Statewide Law Enforcement Award during the Veterans of Foreign Wars of New Jersey convention in Wildwood this week, topping his selection as the officer of the year in the statewide organization’s largest district.
“We, the members of Fair Lawn PBA #67, are very proud of Jeff Welsh,” union President David Boone said. “He has served the Borough of Fair Lawn with great distinction for over 22 years and this is a well-deserved recognition of his excellent police work.
“The Borough leaders and the residents should take great pride in having such an exceptional officer serving them.”
Welsh, whose understated temperament and dedication to putting his fellow officers’ needs ahead of his own command respect, specializes in investigating fraud. He often works with federal agencies to solve crime.
The senior detective’s attention to detail helps crack cases that might otherwise go cold, Boone said.
Welsh worked the killing of fellow Officer Mary Ann Collura in 2003, just one of several high-profile cases he helped put down over the years.
His name was entered into statewide consideration after receiving the distinction from District 2 in February. The district is comprised of every VFW post in Bergen County.
Other Fair Lawn officers have been chosen as District Officer of the Year, but Welsh is its first to receive the top award from the state VFW.
The convention continues through tomorrow.
