NEWSBREAK: A suspicious person known to police was carrying a knife when he was shot and killed after assaulting two officers who approached him at the Lyndhurst Library this afternoon, law enforcement authorities told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
No one else was injured.
“All of the officers are OK,” Police Chief James O’Connor told CLIFFVIEW PILOT just after the shooting, which occurred while police were checking on a suspicious person just after 2 p.m.
O’Connor said the suspect was transported to an area hospital, where sources with direct knowledge of his condition said he was pronounced dead.
The officers were also taken to Hackensack University Medical Center be treated for shock, he said.
The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office was interviewing witnesses and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Identification was collecting evidence.
The area surrounding the 300 block of Valley Brook Avenue, where the library is located, was closed to all traffic.
