YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: A 64-year-old New Jersey man admitted today that he groped and placed his finger inside a sleeping woman sitting next to him on board a flight from Hong Kong to Newark Liberty International Airport. Ramesh Advani, who was arrested as he got off the plane, could face up to three years in prison after pleading guilty in federal court in Newark to abusive sexual contact.
Advani was seated next to the victim while on board an overnight flight on May 10, 2010. The woman had a blanket covering part of her body as she slept, federal authorities said.
At some point, Advani “reached his hand under the Victim’s blanket, and knowingly and intentionally touched the Victim in the area of the Victim’s genitalia, groin and inner thigh,” according to a complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Newark. He then “inserted one or more of his fingers into, and penetrated, the Victim’s genitalia,” it says.
Two passengers sitting directly behind them witnessed the incident — which they said ended when Advani reached inside his own pants and cleaned his genitals with a handful of napkins.
The good Samaritans began kicking her chair. She awoke, “went to the bathroom and then alerted the Flight’s crew members….”
U.S. District Judge Dennis M. Cavanaugh could send Advani to federal prison for up to three years at a scheduled Aug. 1 sentencing.
The federal government has exclusive jurisdiction over all sexual abuse cases that occur in American airplanes over international waters, because such crimes are not within the jurisdiction of any state.
FBI agents made the case, which was presented by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Barbara Llanes and Zach
Intrater of the U.S. Attorney’s Office Criminal Division in Newark.
