YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: An Elmwood Park motel guest locked a clerk in a back room, took $150 and fled in the cab she’d called for him — which made his arrest pretty simple, police told CLIFFVIEW PILOT this afternoon.
Antoine Jackson, 25, of Paterson was checking out of the Townhouse Inn on Route 46 around 12:15 p.m. when he asked the clerk to call the cab, Capt. Michael Foligno said.
As she did, he opened the unlocked door to the plexiglass-enclosed office, forced her into a back room and locked the door, Foligno said.
Jackson, who claimed he didn’t have money for cab fare, rifled through the register drawer and took what was inside, the captain said.
When his ride showed up, Jackson got in.
The clerk, meanwhile, kept cool, called Elmwood Park police and gave them the name of the cab company. After getting the drop-off address, they called their Paterson colleagues, who went straight there and took him into custody.
“Not the brightest bulb in the chandelier,” Foligno said.
Jackson was being transferred to the Bergen County Jail, on $20,000 bail, from Elmwood Park police headquarters late this afternoon. He’s being charged with robbery, burglary and criminal restraint, as well as with being a disorderly person.
