"Cirque du Soleil added a lot to the festivities. I still can't believe the one on the stilts!" said Janet Russell, the Liberty Humane Society's director of development.

"A big hit of the day was the microchipping," Russell said. "A lot folks enjoyed seeing the Neuter Commuter [mobile spay/neuter unit/ and learning about spay/neuter."
Making the free service possible were donations from, among others, Fetch! Pet Care; Halliburton Homes; Panepinto Properties, Hufnagel Landscaping and TD Bank, Russell said.
Robin Pinkowitz from Jersey City's Department of Health and Human Services also provided information on licensing.
"Microchipping and licensing are key to keeping Jersey City's dogs safe and easily returned should they become lost or stolen," Russell said.
Although there weren't as many adoptions as the soceity would have liked, "a lot of our adoptable dogs got some positive feedback," she said. "We asked everyone that showed interest to contact the shelter today when it opened."
Some visitors also offered to be foster "parents," which "takes a big strain off of the animal and shelter staff as well, especially when we have so many animals at LHS," Russell said.
She also cited Dr.. Karen Zelinski (DVM) "for volunteer her time and expertise in providing the microchipping," as well as the event's emcee, Joe Pentangelo of the ASPCA and Animal Precinct.
