UPDATE: A 59-year-old Saddle River man who jumped more than 50 feet to his death from the top of the parking garage at Hackensack University Medical Center today was an organized crime associate who was to have turned himself in to federal authorities, CLIFFVIEW PILOT has learned.
Former U.S. Navy Seal Edward Cobb was being treated for cancer at the hospital, sources said.
He was to have surrendered to federal authorities yesterday but didn’t show, leading a U.S. District Court judge to issue a warrant for his arrest, they said.
Cobb was taken to the emergency trauma unit and was pronounced dead at 6:50 p.m., Police Capt. Timothy Lloyd told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
Records show a decades-long criminal history for Cobb — a former Glen Rock and Fairview resident — that includes home invasions, kidnapping and burglary.
“He was faking dementia to try and stay out of prison,” a law enforcement official told CLIFFVIEW PILOT. “He originally was supposed to surrender in San Antonio in January.”
